Opportunities to Get Involved
The Success By 6 initiative needs your support! There are many opportunities to get involved in the movement. Success By 6 and United Way of Central Indiana are accepting donations and coordinating volunteers to help further its goals.
The United Way "Volunteer Solutions" website lists opportunities for individuals and groups to volunteer with a number of different agencies through one-time and ongoing commitments.
Volunteer Opportunity
United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) in partnership with Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) has created an initiative to raise students’ reading levels. ReadUP will target students who can benefit from additional reading practice, and from fostering relationships with caring adults. One of the keys to breaking the cycle of need in our community is ensuring that all children are successful in school. Volunteer tutors will play an important role in the success of our community by having a direct impact on the academic achievement of our children.
Did You Know?
About 30% of all Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) 4th-graders are reading two or more grades below their current grade level. In many cases this is the beginning of a path that carries a high risk of not graduating from high school.
Research shows that fourth grade is a crucial turning point in a child’s education. Through third grade children are learning to read. At fourth grade they must begin reading to learn.
Volunteers are asked to commit to one hour per week to tutor two 4th graders (a half-hour each) in an effort to help raise the students’ reading level.
